HOMER NARR2-LM/Ref@5503
The forest was untouched, trackless,
dark. Orange light flickered from time
to time on the distant undersides of the
ice or the perpetual clouds that moved
restlessly to and fro inside this great
cavern in the ice.
"How can they live?" Larin asked. "How
can there be a forest here?"
"This must be the oldest forest in the
world," Peter answered. "These beeches
grew in Antarctica when it was still a
part of Pangea, the First Continent.
There's a magma vent somewhere down here
that heats the place enough, and sends
up light enough to feed the trees during
the long winter."
"Why wasn't this place discovered? We've
had satellites scanning Antarctica for
over a hundred years. Radar, infrared,
UV, magnetic flux, everything. This
place should show up like a beacon."
Peter shook his head. "I don't know, but
I'd guess that between the ice, the
aurora, the geology of this place and
the narrow scan path of the satellites
themselves it's well hidden. Certainly
no one's been here before us."
It was then that Rover reported they'd
found the building.
